A New Era for HIP
Greetings from Colorado (The only place I know where you can run a marathon in searing desert sun in the morning only to get snowbound for 12 hours at a gas station on your way home that evening).
Two weeks ago I asked a group of HIP educators and students how we could commemorate Dr. Zimbardo’s life and legacy. I was ready with a “small” answer: we’d leverage our network to collect tributes from around the world and then send them to the family…etc.
But a conversation participant jumped in, answering my question in a far bigger way. She reminded us that Phil left us a legacy that is only now beginning to truly blossom. We can recommit ourselves to the mission to engage in and instruct heroic behavior. His dream can become our own and we can weave it into the fabric of our lives as he had. We are the students of a mentor who infused us with the power to make extraordinary change and who trusted us to carry the message on. Now, we must become the mentors to others, the Master of the Old World and this New one….a world without Dr. Zimbardo in it.
Her brain went bigger, reminding me to think as Dr. Z had: without limits, with infinite compassion, and with a zest for life and enthusiasm for building heroes around the world. Educators, citizens, and heroes in training: this is our Call to Action.
Catch you next month,
-Ellie
Those who were impacted personally by Dr. Zimbardo, please consider sending us your tribute to his life and legacy:
Send your Zimardo tribute to first be shared with the family. It will later be made public on a permanent webpage on HIP's site. (Requests to keep the tribute private, for family only, please use “PRIVATE” in the subject line)
To submit text: email [email protected] with your text response (under half a page please!)
To submit a video: record the video on your phone or computer and email it to [email protected] (under 2 minutes please!)
Deadlines: submit your tribute by November 21.
Please use the subject line "Tribute" in your response to help us manage this effort effectively.
“Ciao, da Roma.”
Is that how you say it? If not our friends in Italy will correct us this week when Matt Langdon and Dr. Ari Kohen travel to Rome to present at the “La Società Italiana di Psicoterapia Integrata e Strategica” Conference. Matt Langdon will speak on “The Making of Hero” and Ari Kohen will speak on “Ethical Considerations of Heroism Training” on November 16. They will then facilitate a live Level One Hero Training Course on November 18. You can still register for the training by emailing [email protected] or register for the conference by emailing [email protected].

Check out the Level One Hero Training Course (virtual, asynchronous)
America just had an interesting week. Perhaps other folks around the globe agree. Wherever you’re from you might be wondering “What can I do to improve my community?”. Join the Level One HIP Hero Training Course, which will help you prepare for heroic action and pro-social behavior. Your time will be well-spent in this course if you seek personal development, alignment with personal values, and to prepare yourself to act effectively in emergencies or ambiguous situations. It’s also a great way to connect with like-minded people. The course is self-paced and typically requires a commitment of 6-8 hours, depending on the detail with which you engage in the reflections and activities. Email [email protected] to get started.
Upcoming “Giving Tuesday” Fundraising Campaign
We are proud to be initiating a “Giving Tuesday” campaign this year, which will take place in the days leading up to Tuesday, December 3. This is an opportunity for HIP to demonstrate what the organization, its students, and its teachers have achieved with the support of its community this year and to kindly ask for continued financial support to keep enacting our mission next year. You can donate to HIP today by clicking here.
And as a Post Script: a little peek at that marathon course I referenced earlier out here on the Colorado Plateau….
