Happy New Year from HIP!
To friends and colleagues new and old, thank you for your support.
Hello!
To those celebrating it, we wish you a very happy New Year from Vermont, California, Nebraska, Washington, Bangkok, Rwanda, and Australia!
Thank you for sticking with us through a year of success and sadness. We especially appreciate those who sent us encouragement and condolences after the passing of our founder, Dr. Philip Zimbardo.
As we enter a new year, our hopes are high and our sleeves are rolled up. With Phil’s wisdom in mind and an exciting subject matter to chat about, we are looking forward to collaborating with old friends and holding training events on a few continents in 2025.
You can use this newsletter or follow HIP on Instagram at @heroicimaginationproject or on Facebook to keep up to date on our work. We welcome you to reach out about bringing services to your organization or collaborating on projects that advance our collective knowledge in this field.
Thank you for all you might be doing to practice everyday heroism in your own life. See you next year!

Heroes from the Level One Hero Training Course
In the Level One Hero Training Course, students from around the world reflect on how they can practice heroic behavior in their everyday lives. A great way to do that is to identify real heroes and specify the actions and traits that make them heroic. Participants then consider how to emulate those traits in their own lives. Here are some heroes from this month:
Sachin Tendulkar is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time. His humility, dedication, and sportsmanship have made him a role model for millions of young cricketers and sports enthusiasts across the globe.
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was an Indian social reformer, jurist, economist, and politician. He is best known for his role in the drafting of the Constitution of India and for being a champion of the rights of the Dalits (historically referred to as "Untouchables") and other marginalized communities.
You can sign up for the Level One Course by emailing [email protected].
Heroism Science Conference 2025 - Submit your abstracts and come see us!
Several HIP members will convene at the Heroism Science Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska in September 2025. You can explore the conference website here. Please consider joining us there as we deepen our knowledge of heroic behavior.
Listen and Learn
Some of us are resting at home for the holiday season. As you do so, here are a few pieces of work that demonstrate how people have applied knowledge about bystander behavior, heroism, and human nature more broadly in the real world. Enjoy!
Podcast: Throughline - When Things Fall Apart. An discussion about human nature during crisis.
TED Talk: Creating Ethical Cultures in Business. Brook Deterline served on the HIP BOD in the mid-2010s and developed the corporate initiatives program.
Book: Jennifer Brown - How to Be An Inclusive Leader . This book popped up in a graduate level leadership class last month. It effectively and very concisely uses language about bystander behavior and other concepts from social psychology to enourage folks to use their privilege to advance DEI-related issues.
