Welcome to Issue 0020

Hello everyone and welcome to another issue of the Heroic Imagination Newsletter. As you know we're always working to bring you the latest in research, psychology, and news all about understanding heroism and bystanderism. In this issue, we will focus on research into factors that affect why people act in situations of conflict and the cultural and psychological barriers they must overcome. I've also included a few inspiring news stories to show that personal barriers CAN be overcome.

As I've mentioned before we have 4 days of events coming up in San Francisco this March. Tickets for Dr. Zimbardo's Birthday Dinner are being sold fast, we already have 14 of 90 available seats booked in the first week of ticket sales. Bystanders reaction to bullying: A Cross‐cultural Analysis of Personal Correlates Among Italian and Singaporean Students. This paper discusses the relationship between bullying and individual cultural elements. It takes a range of factors into account such as affective and cognitive empathy, and cultural factors such as collectivism and individualism. Full Article Here

Monterey Park shooter disarmed by patrons. A gunman opened fire at a dance studio in Monterey Park, then went to a second dance facility in Alhambra, where he was confronted by two community members. They were able to disarm him and take possession of his weapon. The suspect then fled the studio in a white van, which police later found. Full Article Here

Friend similarity in attitudes toward bullying and sense of responsibility to intervene. This study found that students in similar friendship groups tended to share a similar sense of responsibility towards bullying and social justice. The Authors of this paper suggest that this highlights the importance of addressing the peer group in anti-bullying intervention. Full Article Here

Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine. Many Ukrainians have had to step up and do the hard yards this last year, including the first lady of Ukraine. She is leading a contingent of ministers and mayors on the world stage in an attempt to secure more Western aid for her war-torn nation. You can watch the clip of her talk Here
