Welcome to Issue 0022
We're happy to report another successful training session delivered! Matt Langdon and Ari Kohen worked with a group at the University of Porto this week, talking about barriers to action, how to overcome them, and the role of heroism in the modern age. HIP has a standing partnership with a group in Porto, allowing us to keep coming back to train more heroes. Ongoing partnerships with groups like this allow us to have the most significant impact as Heroism is something that must be practiced and seen to become second nature.
Articles of the Week
A UPS driver saved a woman from a frigid creek while on his delivery route - Mariann Rott, 76, was rescued by UPS driver Patrick Shore when she fell into a creek on her property and became stuck in the frigid water for 45 minutes. The article discusses bystanders who become heroes in tragic situations. These people often put themselves in danger to help others, despite the risk to their own safety. The article raises the question of what motivates these heroes to take such actions. According to the author, heroes are not necessarily different from other people in terms of personality traits, but they are people who believe they can make a meaningful impact and often have special training that fuels their confidence. The article also highlights the importance of nurturing the seed of heroism in all of us, as many people have the potential to be heroes if given the opportunity. Link Here
In this clip, a man saves a driver who has fainted in their car while driving on the highway. He says that given 10,000 chances he would still do the same thing. This is another great example of how you need to be aware of your surroundings to act heroically. Once aware of the situation, this good samaritan didn't hesitate to jump into action. Link Here
A new study by La Trobe University has found that surfers in Victoria, Australia, save hundreds of people from drowning each year. The study surveyed 550 surfers over two years and found that surfers rescued over 250 people from the water and administered first aid to over 100 people. The study also revealed that surfers helped to prevent drownings by giving safety advice 2,500 times, particularly at unpatrolled beaches. Link Here
Without heroes, we’re all plain people who don't know how far we can go.
