Our Plans for the Second Half of 2024
Half Way Already?
Greetings from an historically cold south Gippsland. It has actually dropped below freezing a few times this week, which will be laughable for some of you in more frigid climes. HIP has started the third Level 2 cohort this month and people are still taking up Level 1 training every week. It’s always pleasing to imagine the HIP message spreading slowly out into the world. In a non-horror-movie slow spread.
Every word has consequences. Every silence, too.
Jean-Paul Sartre
UPDATES FROM HIP-LAND
We are scheduled to run an open lecture and closed workshop in Rome on November 16th and 17th. We’re investigating other opportunities in Europe at around those dates. Let me know if you’re keen to get us to visit you.
On that note, we’re curious as to the reasons so many Europeans seem to gravitate to the HIP message and mission compared to other continents. Do you have any theories?
HEROISM FROM THE WEB
Moral courage means standing up for our principles to stop wrongdoing or protect others, despite the risks. How can we foster it? This article from Julia Sasse answers that question. LINK
Malcolm Gladwell has started a post on a particular type of heroism - Medal of Honor winners. You can get started with that by listening to the first two episodes here: LINK
The “hero jobs” got a lot of attention during the early years of the covid pandemic. It started as a broadly positive movement, but quickly turned sour for numerous reasons. This BBC piece examines that and offers a potential starting point for a solution: “the answer may lie in cultivating greater awareness of the many different reasons that someone could choose a "heroic" profession – besides the general wish to help others”. SIGNOFF
This is my last email for HIP for a while as another board member is taking over for a while. Ellie Jacques will be well-known to some of you. She’s been involved in HIP for nearly ten years on and off and loves the topic.
I’m looking forward to doing some long-term thinking for HIP and may drop in from time to time to give you updates on that. Meanwhile, be kind to yourself and may you bump into many interesting people.
